AOL Instant Messenger Features

AOL® Instant Messenger (AIM) for BlackBerry® smartphones allows you to chat in virtual real time with your instant messaging (IM) contacts when and where you want to – not just when you’re in front of your computer.

Download From Your BlackBerry Smartphone

If the AIM icon is already on your home screen after you register your BlackBerry smartphone, all you have to do is click the icon and follow the instructions to install the service2.

If you don’t see the icon on your home screen, browse to http://www.blackberry.com/instantmessaging on your BlackBerry device and select AIM from the list.

Getting Started

Once you’ve installed AOL® Instant Messenger (AIM®) for BlackBerry® smartphones, all you need to get started is an AIM Screen Name. If you already have one, you can use the same AIM Screen Name and password to sign into AOL Instant Messenger on your BlackBerry device.

To sign in, first make sure your BlackBerry device is connected to a wireless network. Then:

  1. Click the AOL Instant Messenger for BlackBerry icon on your device home screen
  2. Enter your AIM Screen Name and password
  3. Click Sign On

How do I...?

Add a Buddy:

  1. On the Buddy List® screen, press the Menu key
  2. Click Add Buddy
  3. In the Screen Name field, type the AIM screen name of the Buddy
  4. Click OK

Set my availability status:

  1. On the Buddy List screen, press the Menu key.
  2. Click My Status
  3. Click a status
  4. Click OK

Start a conversation:

  1. On the Buddy List screen, highlight a Buddy
  2. Click the trackwheel or trackball
  3. Type a message.
  4. Press the Enter key.

Add an emoticon to graphically express a feeling:

  1. When you are typing a message, press the Symbol key two to three times
  2. Click an emoticonr

Customize my sign-in process:

To sign on to AOL Instant Messenger for BlackBerry devices automatically each time that you turn on your BlackBerry device, select the Auto-Sign On check box.

System Requirements

Before downloading AOL® Instant Messenger (AIM) for your BlackBerry® smartphone, check to see that you meet the below requirements:

  • Supported smartphones: BlackBerry® 8800 from T-Mobile USA, BlackBerry® 7100i, BlackBerry® 7130e, BlackBerry® 7250, BlackBerry® 7520 and BlackBerry® 8703e from Sprint
  • 350 kB (350000 bytes) of free memory (Go to Options -> Status to find your device's free memory)
  • An AIM Screen Name (visit www.aim.com on your desktop browser to learn how to obtain a Screen Name)
  • BlackBerry data service
  • If your device is connected to a BlackBerry® Enterprise Server, your IT Department must have IT Policy set to allow AOL Instant Messenger functionality
