BlackBerry® Professional Software is designed to provide the core wireless communications and collaboration features and security found in the BlackBerry® Enterprise Server, all in a smaller package. Small to mid-sized businesses can now install BlackBerry Professional Software on their email server instead of requiring a separate host server.

IT Policies
The BlackBerry Manager has been redesigned to provide streamlined access to management and configuration tools. The same IT policy rules are available, but customers can now choose from predefined templates of IT policies that are designed to make IT policy management easier.
Administration
Group-based administration and role-based administration, designed for larger organizations with multiple IT administrators, have been removed from BlackBerry Professional Software.
Applications Support
Support for applications has also been simplified. Java applications for BlackBerry smartphones and BlackBerry® Browser applications are still available, but existing or new BlackBerry® MDS Runtime applications are not supported.
Instant Messaging
Users can communicate with instant messaging applications such as Google Talk™ or Yahoo!® Messenger, but BlackBerry Professional Software does not support server-based enterprise instant messaging applications such as IBM® Lotus® Sametime® or Microsoft® Office Live Communications Server.

Client Access Licenses (CALs)
BlackBerry® Professional Software supports all existing CALs regardless of their type, including CALs for BlackBerry® Enterprise Server – Small Business Edition and CALs for BlackBerry® Enterprise Server.
Technical Support
Customers purchasing BlackBerry Professional Software are eligible to register for one complimentary BlackBerry® technical support incident from Research In Motion (RIM). This support incident will allow registered customers to benefit from direct technical assistance from RIM, should they require it, as they install and begin using BlackBerry Professional Software.
