Business Challenge
Determine whether GPS-enabled BlackBerry® smartphones can be used to track a diabetic patient’s daily life events and health conditions to offer physicians valuable information about their patients
Solution
Wilfrid Laurier University and several partners, including Research In Motion (RIM), sponsored a pilot project involving 40 diabetic patients. The project used GPS-enabled BlackBerry smartphones, with Bluetooth® technology, to remotely monitor and relay health information from several medical devices back to researchers.
Results
- Successful use of wireless technology, GPS and Bluetooth technology in a pilot project for healthcare
- Significantly improved data capture because of better IT controls
- Easy on patients
- Long-term application in healthcare
