Business Challenge
University Health Network (UHN) and Mount Sinai Hospital wanted to test whether smartphone technology could be used to help patients with Type II Diabetes monitor and report their blood pressure and blood sugar readings from home to improve how their health is managed.
Solution
- A trial group was given medical equipment for blood sugar and blood pressure that sent readings to Bluetooth® enabled BlackBerry® smartphones provisioned for use on UHN’s BlackBerry® Enterprise Server
- The hospitals created a custom application to gather the results, provide text-based alerts to patients on the BlackBerry smartphones and send results to physicians
Results
- Easily adopted by patients
- Cost-effective contribution to healthcare
- Improved patient health
- Secure way to exchange patient data
- Paving the way for more
