This development approach requires familiarity with web services. If you have not worked with web services before, we suggest reviewing these third-party resources:
- Web services for Java: http://java.sun.com/webservices/
- Web services for .NET: MSDN
The RAD runtime environment is called the BlackBerry MDS Runtime and it is treated like any other BlackBerry JavaME application. It can be installed locally by the user, over-the-air (OTA), or pushed out by an enterprise administrator.
The applications that leverage the BlackBerry MDS Runtime are called BlackBerry MDS Applications. These applications can be written using either the standalone BlackBerry MDS Studio tool or the BlackBerry Plug-in for Microsoft Visual Studio. Both of these development tools allow you to create enhanced GUI’s through a WYSIWYG drag-and-drop interface. This enables you to create far more advanced user interfaces without creating JavaME applications from scratch: truly the best of both worlds.

*Please note that applications created through the RAD approach can only be used on BlackBerry smartphones that are connected to a BlackBerry Enterprise Server. This is due to required data compression functionalities that are not available to smartphones using BlackBerry Internet Service.
