Two development tools are available for the Rapid Application Development approach. Both are available for free download and offer the same development functionality. The BlackBerry Plug-in for Microsoft Visual Studio is ideal for those who prefer to develop in Microsoft Visual Studio 2005/2008, while the BlackBerry MDS Studio offers the same functionality within Eclipse

- Applications can be published using a tool outside of the Visual Studio environment. This facilitates deployment into a BlackBerry Enterprise Server environment.
BlackBerry MDS RUNTIME
To deploy your BlackBerry MDS Runtime applications created with BlackBerry MDS Studio or the BlackBerry Plug-in for Microsoft Visual Studio, BlackBerry MDS Runtime must first be deployed to BlackBerry smartphones.
BlackBerry MDS Runtime is the container-based execution environment for all BlackBerry MDS Runtime applications. BlackBerry MDS Runtime is designed to provide the common underlying services that are used by BlackBerry client applications, including the user interface framework, data management, and client-server communication services.
